A clean desk starts under it. Most desk setups have a tangle of power bricks, USB hubs, and charging cables hanging in plain sight — and fixing it takes less than an afternoon and about $30–50 worth of gear.
Here’s the system we use and recommend.
The Core Problem
Cables fall into three categories:
- Power — laptop adapter, monitor power, desk lamp
- Data — USB hub, keyboard/mouse receivers, ethernet
- Charging — phone, earbuds, watch
Each needs a slightly different solution. Trying to lump them all together with one product rarely works cleanly.
Step 1: A Cable Tray Under the Desk
A cable management tray mounts to the underside of your desk with screws or adhesive and holds your power strip and all the heavy bricks up off the floor.
Our pick: Yecaye 2 Cable Tray
This type of tray holds a standard 6-outlet power strip and has mesh walls to velcro loose cables to. Everything that was on the floor or hanging goes into this tray.
Step 2: Velcro Cable Ties (Not Zip Ties)
Velcro ties are reusable. Zip ties are not. When you inevitably need to re-route a cable, you’ll thank yourself for using velcro. A 100-pack costs about $8 and lasts years.
Bundle cables that run the same direction together. Power cables together, data cables together. Don’t mix them — it creates noise issues and makes future changes harder.
Step 3: Cable Clips Along the Desk Edge
For cables that need to come up from the tray to the desk surface — USB hub cable, monitor cable, laptop charger — cable clips adhesive-mounted to the desk edge keep them routed neatly and accessible.
Best for: Keeping 2–4 cables running along a path without them falling off the back.
Step 4: Cable Sleeves for Visible Runs
If a cable has to cross open space (like from a wall outlet to your desk), a fabric cable sleeve bundles and hides the whole run. Cut to length with scissors.

The Result
After 30–45 minutes:
- Nothing sits on the floor except the desk legs
- All cables route to the underside tray
- The only visible cables are the ones actively connecting to devices on the desk surface
The difference in how clean a setup looks and feels is significant. Highly worth the afternoon.
